The name of this winter's production is ”Check Please!" by Jonathan Rand: a rollicking comedy set in a restaurant about a series of increasingly terrible dates. The audience seating is built on the stage for an extra immersive and humorous experience. As a result seating for this weekend's performance is limited, so buy your tickets in advance here:

The Winter Assembly will be next Friday, December 15th – 11:39 a.m. – 12:39 a.m.

We will be on a Single Assembly Schedule for that day.

Performances by Band, Choir, Cheer, K-Pop, Tahitian Officers, Creators University and Showtime Dunk Team! Wear your Ugly Sweater – sign up in the Activities Office if you would like to be judged in the official contest.

 

Winter Week Dress-Up Days – 12/18 – 12/21

  • Monday, Dec. 18: “Hibernation Day”

 

  • Tuesday, Dec. 19:” Family Photo Day” – Wear your favorite flannel shirt and meet in the Quad at lunch for our family photo!

 

  • Wednesday, Dec. 20: “Bright Lights Day” –

Freshmen wear Green, Sophomores wear Yellow, Juniors wear Blue, Seniors wear Red and Staff is Silver & Gold!

 

  • Thursday, Dec. 21: “NMHS North Pole” – Dress up like anyone who lives in the North Pole! Santa, Mrs. Claus, reindeer, elves, misfit toys, etc.

 

All 3rd Period Classes! The NMHS Canned Food Drive competition! Each class should try to come up with at least 30 cans, and then we can make a significant contribution to our local food banks. Please bring your cans to class and we will come and pick them up as needed. We are donating this year to LOV Newark.

The winning class will get a 3rd period pizza party, sponsored by ASB.

Update for Grad Nite:  All paperwork is now due for Grad Nite.  If you did not turn in a registration form, please pick one up in the Main Office and turn it in to Ms. Destowet in the Main Office before we leave for break.

 

Did you know that the two biggest needs for the homeless are socks and underwear?  For the second year Chef Chris will be collecting “socks and uns” for the homeless.  They must be new, preferably with tags and bags.  Please help those that need it most with what they need most. Look for the red can in room 443.  Thanks.

 

Applications are also available for Lincoln and Snow Schools Science Camps – See Mrs. Charron for those applications. There is a mandatory interview/selection & training day on January 10th.

 

There are still NMHS school planners available for sale. They are $10 each and can be purchased from Ms.Destowet in the Main Office for students to keep track of all of their assignments and help stay organized. Support MCA, Ink!

College and Career Center

HOURS: 7:15 am until 3:30 pm (open before school, brunch, lunch and after school)

We have Computers for students to use or to print out work (NOT DURING CLASS) Students can obtain Work Permits, Job information, College information, and ROP information (please do not send students during class) Students can also pick up Volunteer forms and Recommendation letters here

ACT Test this Saturday 12/9 - This is the last test for seniors to take!!

 

Work Permits: Students inquiring about obtaining a work permit will only be available for pick up or drop off during brunch, lunch, or after school. No work permits may be processed during class time.

 

There are currently 2 scholarships open for applications. One is for The Sons of Italy Western Foundation and one is for the South Bay Chinese Service Club Scholarship. Both are available on our school website.

 

Washington Hospital Service League Health Care Scholarship applications are now being accepted. The deadline is April 2nd, 2018 so students have plenty of time to submit their application. If students have questions or want to pick up an application, they may come to the College and Career Center. It will also be available on our school website.

Mountain Mikes Pizza is hiring in Newark. They are looking for cashiers & pizza makers. Applications are in the College and Career Center! 

 

Chick Fil-A (Auto Mall Location) is hiring for part time positions. They have an employee scholarship program which awards up to $25,000 dollars per year. Please go to the College and Career Center for details.

 

The Ron Brown Scholar Program is now available in the College & Career Center. To be eligible, students must be U.S. Citizens, Black/ African-American, and current seniors at the time of their application. This opportunity is NOT for current college students. 

This scholarship is a chance to win up to $10,000.

 

Looking for Scholarship Money?----Enter the 2017-2018 Optimist International Essay Contest
The Newark Optimist Club (Club #20261) invites Newark Memorial students to participate in their 2017-2018 Essay Contest.  This year’s topic for the 700-800 word essay is:  “Can Society Function Without Respect?”  Students who are under the age of 18, as of October 1, 2017, and have not already graduated from high school, are eligible, and encouraged to enter the contest.

At the club level, 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place medallions and cash prizes ($200, $100, $50) will be awarded.  The first place essay will also be sent to the District competition, where the winner will be awarded a $2,500 college scholarship.

Class News 

Ohlone College Connection Winter break begins the Dec. 18 – Jan 5. Classes resume on the 8th January 2018

Ohlone Connection students are instructed NOT to enter NMHS campus on the week of 18-22nd December (unless they have an afternoon class.)

 

If you'd like to enter the Cougar ticket raffle, please place your Cougar tickets in the raffle bin located in the College and Career Center, to the left of the Library door. Raffle winners will be announced every other Friday.  The bin will be emptied after every raffle in order to have a new batch of tickets to choose from every week. We’ll have different prizes throughout the year, including the possibility of winning a yearbook and tickets to school events.  Remember to wear your Cougar blue and gold every Friday!

Newark Improv is having a show this Friday 12/8 at 6:30 PM

It will be in the Black Box Theater and completely free

 

Interact and Speak Easy will be holding another open mic, Expressions Over Espresso, at Slap Face Coffee this Friday from 7-9 PM. Come to speak or to listen to poetry, spoken word, song and more!

 

The name is "Check Please" and the dates are 12/1, 12/2, 12/8, 12/9 at 7pm
Matinee at 12/10 at 5pm. $15 for VIP. General seating is $10 and Students with ID $5. VIP get front row seating and one complementary item from the concession stand each act. Don't forget to include that there is a student preview show on Thursday 11/30. Seats are limited so show up early

Next: The Cougars (2-0) host Santa Clara on Tuesday night, December 12, at the Event Center. The JV game begins at 5:30 pm, with the Varsity contest to follow at 7:00 pm. GO COUGARS!

 

Congratulations girls JV Soccer for defeating Pittsburg 2 -1 last night

And Congratulations Girls Varsity  Soccer for defeating Pittsburg in their home opener 8 - 0 with goals from  Laura Fuentes, Kristina Alvarez, Priscilla Alvarez, Brianna Santillan, and Selena Santillan; assisted by Lissette Mason, Emily Loaisiga, Laura Fuentes, Jessica Novak, and Kristina Alvarez.
