Memorial’s Got Talent:

Talent is all around us here at NMHS. Bring your act to the audition the week of February 14th through the 17th. See Mrs. Hong in the Choir room to sign up. Finalists for Memorial's Got Talent will perform on March 31 for prizes.



The annual Interact Speech Contest is just around the corner! Sign up and write about this year's theme "Rotary serving humanity." How does community service affect you? And what can we do to better serve humanity? There are also REALLY HELPFUL AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED workshops that will be held after school where you can sign up and get help. So sign up and get writing!! (This week’s workshops will be today from 3pm-4pm, Thursday 2pm-4pm, and Friday 3pm-4pm after school).



The Choir program needs you and your beautiful voice! Auditions for next year's choirs will take place February 6 through 10 after school. Please sign up in the Choir room for a time slot and details.


Seniors attending Grad Nite:


Your 2nd payment is now past due!  If you have not made your 2nd payment, have not turned in your paperwork or have put off signing up to go... please see Ms. Destowet in the Main Office immediately!


We have filled 4 buses and have already started a waiting list for a 5th bus.  Once this bus is full, there is no more room!  So if you haven't signed up and still want to go, it is imperative to see Ms. Destowet today!

Attention graduating seniors, there are numerous scholarships that have been added to the NMHS School Loop website. Cal State, East Bay is hosting a Cash for College (FAFSA  & Dream Application assistance) event in conjunction with our annual Education Summit.

It is our hope that you will share this information with students and parents from you school who may need assistance in completing the 2017-2018 FAFSA or Dream application. 

As you know, completing the FAFSA prior to the March 2, 2017 priority date will ensure that high school seniors are considered for priority financial aid, including Cal Grants.

Harbor Freight Tools in Newark is hiring. You must be 18 to apply. Positions are salary plus commission. If you are interested please see Ms. Cranon in the Career Center. 


Kumon of Newark is hiring for part time positions. Must be 16 and strong in math and reading skills. If you need information on how to apply, you can pick up a flyer in the Career Center.


Attention students interested in the STEM Program, Morpho Detection is now accepting applications for their scholarship opportunity. Students that are interested can pick up an application in the Career Center. There will be an internship offered to the winner of the scholarship.


Looking for Scholarship Money?

Women in Mining California Chapter is proud to offer five $2,000 scholarships to high school seniors or current college students pursuing majors in mining, geology, engineering, or environmental. Carrington College has scholarships available for students that are interested in careers in the medical field. Students that are interested can apply through the link on our school loop site. I have also included the information below.

Enter the 2016-2017 Optimist International Essay Contest
The Newark Optimist Club (Club #20261) invites Tri-City resident students to participate in their 2016-2017 Essay Contest.  This year’s topic for the 700-800 word essay is:  “Chasing Optimism in the Face of Challenges.”  Students who are under the age of 18, as of October 1, 2016, and have not already graduated from high school, are eligible, and encouraged to enter the contest.

At the club level, 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place medallions and cash prizes ($200, $100, $50) will be awarded.  The first place essay will also be sent to the District competition, where the winner will be awarded a $2,500 college scholarship.

The Asian Pacific Islanders for Professional and Community Advancement (APCA), a non-profit Employee Resource Group of AT&T, is seeking qualified applicants for its 2017 Scholarship Program.  We are proud to announce that at least twenty-one (21) $2000 APCA National Scholarships will be awarded for the 2017 academic year.  Besides the national scholarships, we are also offering 15 $1000 state scholarships to Northern California & Reno, Nevada students.  The scholarship program is open to all graduating high school seniors of any ethnic or cultural background with a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.

There will be a mandatory BSU meeting on Tuesday during lunch. If you would like to order a t-shirt and perform in HATS, make sure that you are present at the meeting.


The Indo American Club will be having a meeting on Monday next week (Jan 30) in Mrs. Jadhav's room at lunch. We will be going through the times for learning the dances for HATS and where to go for the practices. It's an important meeting!

Mandatory Badminton meeting for all who plan to sign up on Friday, January, 27 in Ms. Tung's room, room 318. 

Official lacrosse practices start Wednesday 1/26 after school, be there! 


Girls’ Basketball: -To complete our 26-game schedule we will be hosting Brookside Christian in a Varsity only game on Monday, February 6, 7:00 pm, in the Event Center.  Access to Event Center at 6:00 pm.

Spring Sports Registration Now Open Registration for Spring Sports is now open. All student-athletes who plan to participate this spring MUST register online. This includes any person who has or is currently participating.



Spring Sports Orientation Spring Sports Orientation will be on Wednesday, February 1st in the Old Gym at 6:30pm. This is mandatory for all spring sports participants and their families as there will be Information about athletics and important team meetings following.


Spring Sports Physicals are on Thursday, February 2nd 6:00 pm in the weight room $20.00.

Everything is due on Friday, February 3rd


  • Registration deadline is Friday February 3rd. NO LATE REGISTRATIONS OR PHYSICALS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
  • Submit a sport physical either on Family ID or to Coach K in the Athletics Office by Friday, February 3rd.

In partnership with the  Newark Police Department, NMHS teachers will present an important Campus Safety training to all students.  On Tuesday, Oct. 4 during period 3 classes staff will conduct Campus Safety Training which includes a video provided to you by Officer Sandoval and Assistant Principal Jonathan Hohm.  This video discusses the principle components of a Lock Down drill and "Run, Hide, Fight".

Cougar Athletics

For the 1st time in a long time, NMHS will have a Run-Swim-Run Biathlon, in which you will run 1 cross country mile, swim 4 laps in the pool, and run another cross country mile with an extra lap around the track. The Biathlon will be held on Thursday, June 9 after school at 2:30!! PLEASE COME PARTICIPATE! It is free, but we are asking for a $3 donation. To sign-up, grab a registration form in Coach Johnson's room (room 320).

Congratulations to the NMHS Varsity Softball Team, and all of the players and coaches on another outstanding season.  The Cougars (22-5) won a second-straight, and undefeated MVAL title (14-0), earned the #2 seed in the NCS Playoffs, and responded with convincing wins over Livermore and Montgomery to reach the NCS Championship Game.  We are proud of you!

Important Parking Lot News:

  • Students must have a valid 2015-16 parking permit in order to park in the student parking lots.  The permit can be obtained in the Accounting Office for $20. 
  • Students may NOT park in faculty parking lots at any time, whether you have a student parking permit or not.  Newark Police Department has already begun issuing tickets for violations.  This ticket is $75.  
  • Students cannot be picked up or dropped off on Cedar Blvd.

If your family was approved for free or reduced lunch during the 2015-2016 school year, your children’s status will be the same ONLY for the first 30 days of the new school year.


Please either go ONLINE after 8/1/2016 at www.heartlandapps.com to fill out an application OR you may fill out a paper application being sent home during the summer and return it in August directly to the Child Nutrition office or the office at any school site.

 List all children and their schools on one (1) application.  To avoid any delays in processing, please remember the following:

  • Only ONE application per residence.  You may apply ONLINE OR with a paper application.

  • List ALL children living in the household (in school or not).

  • List ALL adults living in the home and their GROSS monthly income per individual. Income shown must be from August, 2016 or later.

  • If you qualify based on any assistance you receive you MUST provide the CASE #.  (Simply writing, “YES” will delay processing.)
