EMMILY PATNEAUD CROWNED 2018 STATE WRESTLING CHAMPION

 

Congratulations to Newark Memorial HS sophomore Emmily Patneaud who won the 143 lb Title at the California State Girls Wrestling Championships in Visalia on Saturday.

 

The Lady Cougars placed 11th as a team.

 

Sophomore Ariana Pereira placed 6th at 160 lbs.

NCS D2 GIRLS BASKETBALL QUARTERFINAL NEWS --- LADY COUGARS RALLY FROM 8-POINTS DOWN WITH 35-SECONDS LEFT IN REGULATION TO WIN IN OT---

 

Congratulations to the NMHS Girls Varsity Basketball Team on a their 73-66 overtime win at Redwood High on Friday night.

After leading for most of the first three-quarters, the Cougars fell behind by 8-points, with just 35-seconds to play in the 4th quarter, before two consecutive three-point FG's by Kylie Chan (with 2 missed FT’s by RW in between), a 5-second defensive call on a attempted in-bound play by Redwood, and then a clutch shot off an in-bound play by Haylee Nelson, sent the game to overtime at 57-57. 

 

In OT, the Cougars hit three straight three-point FG's (Chan, Nelson, Savanna Swickard) to jump out to a nine-point lead, with Nelson adding 7 more points from the foul line to seal the TEAM victory over the #4 seed Giants.

 

Highlights: Haylee Nelson (21-points, 15-rebounds), Kylie Chan (21-points, five 3-point FG's), Alayah Bell (15-points), Maleia Colker (6-points), Savanna Swickard (6-points), Rylee Sarasua (4-points, 6-assists, 4-steals). The Cougars made twelve 3-point field-goals.

 

Next: The #5 seed Cougars (24-4) advance to the NCS D2 semifinals, and will play at #1 seed Miramonte (24-4) on Wednesday, February 28, with the tip-off at 7:00 pm.

LADY COUGARS WIN AT HUNT MEMORIAL SHOOTOUT 🏀--- The NMHS Girls Varsity Basketball Team, participating in the Hunt Memorial Shootout for the first-time, defeated Santa Cruz High by the score of 65-23 on Saturday afternoon at Evergreen High School.

 

Highlights: Seven Cougars combined to nail nine 3-point FG's in the victory over the Cardinals. Haylee Nelson led all-scorers with 20-points & grabbed 13-rebounds, with Maleia Colker adding 9-points, and teammates Emily Sunada & Kylie Chan each scoring 8-points. Kylie also recorded 6-assists.

 

Next: The Cougars (5-0) play at Mountain View High (4-3) on Tuesday, December 19, with the JV game to begin at 5:30 pm, and the Varsity contest to follow at 7:00 pm. GO COUGARS!

Newark Optimist Club Girls Holiday Basketball Classic To Tip-Off

 

The annual Newark Optimist Club Girls Holiday Basketball Classic will be held at the Event Center, on the campus of Newark Memorial High School, on December 28, 29, and 30.

 

Eight outstanding high school Varsity basketball teams from throughout the Bay Area will be participating.

 

The schedule for opening day, Thursday, December 28:

 

3:15 pm  San Ramon Valley vs. Pittsburg 

 

4:45 pm  Santa Clara vs. Irvington 

 

6:15 pm  Arroyo vs. Burlingame 

 

7:45 pm  Los Altos vs. Newark Memorial 

 

Game times remain the same on Friday and Saturday, December 29 and 30.

The action tips-off with a 5:30 pm JV game in the Event Center, with the Varsity contest to follow at 7:00 pm.

ATTENTION NMHS STUDENT-ATHLETES---Looking for Scholarship Money?----Enter the 2017-2018 Optimist International Essay Contest

The Newark Optimist Club (Club #20261) invites Tri-City resident students to participate in their 2017-2018 Essay Contest. This year’s topic for the 700-800 word essay is: “Can Society Function Without Respect?” Students who are under the age of 18, as of October 1, 2017, and have not already graduated from high school, are eligible, and encouraged to enter the contest.

At the club level, 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place medallions and cash prizes ($200, $100, $50) will be awarded. The first place essay will also be sent to the District competition, where the winner will be awarded a $2,500 college scholarship.

NMHS ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCEMENTS - WEEK OF OCTOBER 30 - NOVEMBER 3

1. The deadline to register for winter sports (basketball, soccer, wrestling) is THIS FRIDAY!! All registrations must be completed online and all physicals must be turned in to the Athletic Office by FRIDAY, 11/3, in order to attend tryouts Monday, 11/6.

2. The Winter Sports Orientation is THIS WEDNESDAY, 11/1, at 6:30 pm in the Old Gym. This is a very important meeting where department and team information will be distributed. Help with online registration will also be available.

3. The is a meeting for all SAAC members who plan to read at the elementary schools, on Wednesday at lunch in Coach K's office

4. Any student-athletes who have not yet turned in their Walk-A-Thon money, should do so in the Athletic Office ASAP.

DON'T MISS OUT ON YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY THIS WINTER----

 

1.  Attention all students planning to try out for a winter sport (basketball, soccer, wrestling) there is a mandatory athletic orientation on Wednesday Nov 1st at 6:30 pm in the Old Gym.  All students and families must attend as important athletic department and team information will be discussed.

2.  Students planning to try out for a winter sport (basketball, soccer, wrestling) MUST register online at familyid.com <http://familyid.com>  and submit a copy of a current physical BEFORE Friday Nov. 3 or you WILL NOT be allowed to try out.

3.  Sports physicals will be held this Thursday from 3-6pm at Washington High School.  The cost is $20, bring cash or a check made out to WHHS.

COUGARS ADVANCE TO NCS D2 SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS---Congratulations to the NMHS Varsity SoftballTeam (13-11 MVAL) who have been awarded the #9 seed in the 2017 NCS D2 Softball Championships.

The Cougars will begin tournament play against #8 seed Bishop O'Dowd (13-6 WAC-Foothill) on Wednesday, May 24, at the Castro Valley Community Center, with the first-pitch scheduled for 5:00 pm. GO COUGARS!
