COUGARS ADVANCE TO NCS D2 SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS---Congratulations to the NMHS Varsity SoftballTeam (13-11 MVAL) who have been awarded the #9 seed in the 2017 NCS D2 Softball Championships.

The Cougars will begin tournament play against #8 seed Bishop O'Dowd (13-6 WAC-Foothill) on Wednesday, May 24, at the Castro Valley Community Center, with the first-pitch scheduled for 5:00 pm. GO COUGARS!

LADY COUGARS FALL TO DRAGONS IN STATE D2 BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP OPENER---The #12 seed NMHS Girls Varsity Basketball Team lost to #5 seed Sacramento High by the score of 65-31 on Wednesday night in Sacramento.

 

NMHS Highlights: Haylee Nelson (13-points), Tyler McNeil (8-points).

 

CONGRATULATIONS and THANKS to my players and coaches on a successful season, reaching the NCS semifinals, and advancing to NorCal for the second straight year. As their coach, I'm very proud of their effort, and the character they displayed throughout the year. COUGAR PRIDE!

LADY COUGARS RECEIVE MVAL GIRLS BASKETBALL ALL-LEAGUE RECOGNITION---

 

Congratulations to Newark Memorial junior HAYLEE NELSON for being selected to the MVAL All-League First-Team and named the MVAL'S "MOST VALUABLE PLAYER" for the 2016-2017 Girls Basketball season by the league's coaches.

 

Haylee averaged 19.4 points, 16.0 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game during league play. She recorded a double-double (points & rebounds) in 13 of the 14 league games she played.

 

Congrats also to senior TYLER MC NEIL and junior KYLIE CHAN for receiving "HONORABLE MENTION" recognition.

LADY COUGARS EDGE CONCORD IN NCS D2 BASKETBALL--Congratulations to the #13 seed NMHS Girls Varsity Basketball Team, who after defeating #4 seed Tamalpais on Tuesday night, traveled to Concord High on Friday night and beat the #5 seed Minutemen by the score of 54-51, in an exciting NCS Girls D2 Basketball quarterfinal game.

 

NMHS Highlights: Kylie Chan (game-high 14-points), Haylee Nelson (13-points), Rylee Sarasua (10-points), Tyler McNeil (9-points), Rita Evans (8-points).

 

Next: The Lady Cougars (16-12 MVAL) travel to Orinda on Wednesday night, March 1, to take on #1 seed Miramonte (25-3 Diablo-National) in an NCS D2 Girls Basketball semifinal game, with the tip-off set for 7:00 pm. GO COUGARS!

LADY COUGARS BEAT TAMALPAIS IN NCS D2 GIRLS BASKETBALL--Congratulations to the #13 seed Newark Memorial Girls Varsity Basketball Team who defeated #4 seed Tamalpais 55-42 in the opening round of the 2007 NCS D2 Girls Basketball Championships on Tuesday night in Mill Valley.

NMHS Highlights: Haylee Nelson (18-points), Kylie Chan (13-points), Rylee Sarasua (8-points), Tyler McNeil (7-points), Taty Tai (6-points), Emily Sunada (3-points).

Next: The Lady Cougars (15-12, MVAL) will once again travel, and take on #5 seed Concord High School (16-7, Diablo - American League) on Friday night, February 24, with the NCS D2 quarterfinal contest to tip-off at 7:00 pm. GO COUGARS!

LADY COUGARS LOSE TO MONTE VISTA IN HOLIDAY BASKETBALL CLASSIC FINAL---The NMHS Girls Varsity Basketball Team lost to Monte Vista 62-49 in the Championship Game of the annual Newark Optimist Club - Newark Memorial Holiday Basketball Classic on Friday night at the Event Center.

Varsity Highlights: Haylee Nelson (23-points, All-Tourney), Tyler McNeil (All-Tourney), Kylie Chan (13-points). Congrats!

THANKS to all of the players, coaches, officials, parents, friends, fans, NM custodial staff, and the Newark Optimist Club for attending, and making the 3-day event a SUCCESS.

LADY COUGARS BEAT SAN LORENZO---The NMHS Girls Varsity Basketball Team beat the Rebels by the score of 54-39 on Thursday night at the Event Center.

Highlights: Ten Cougars broke into the scoring column, led by junior Haylee Nelson, who scored a game-high 15-points and pulled down 16 rebounds. Junior Taty Tai grabbed 9-boards and scored 6-points. Freshman guard Rylee Sarasua added 8-points in the win.

Next: The Cougars (4-2) play host next week in the annual Newark Optimist Club Holiday Basketball Classic to be held December 28, 29, & 30 at the Event Center. The NMHS Varsity will face San Rafael High School in the first-round on Wednesday, with the tip-off set for 6:15 pm. The Cougars JV Team will take on Half Moon Bay High School in a 1:30 pm afternoon contest. Plan to attend and support NMHS Girls Basketball! GO COUGARS!

LADY COUGARS BASKETBALL NEWS---The NMHS Girls Varsity Basketball Team beat Hayward High by the score of 63-48 on Monday night at the Event Center. Our Cougars JV Team also defeated the Farmers by the score of 35-17.

Highlights: Varsity- Haylee Nelson (20-points, 16-rebounds, 4-blocks, 3-assists), Kylie Chan (12-points, 5-steals), Rylee Sarasua (12-points). JV - Timiya Godfrey (10-points) & Zyra Pineda were named "Co-JV Players of the Game."

Next: The Lady Cougars (3-2) host San Lorenzo on Thursday, December 22, with the game to begin at 7:00 pm in the Event Center. The JV Team will host the St. Francis Frosh at 5:30 pm. GO COUGARS!

Highlights: Junior Haylee Nelson (17-points, 19-rebounds, 4-blocks), senior Tyler McNeil (4-steals, 2-assists)

LADY COUGARS WIN SEASON OPENER---The NMHS Girls Varsity Basketball Team beat Yerba Buena (San Jose) by the score of 66-13 on Tuesday night at the Event Center.

Highlights: Junior Haylee Nelson led all-scorers with 21-points, with senior Rita Evans adding 13-points, and sophomore Emily Sunada contributing 12-points, including two 3-point field goals.

WINTER SPORTS PHYSICALS----Important!!!---Irvington High School is hosting winter sports physicals on Wednesday, November 2, from 3:30 pm to 6 pm in their Main Gym. The cost is $20 (checks may be made to WHHS).

Please share this with your NMHS student-athletes in case they need a winter physical. This is the same day as our mandatory NMHS Winter Athletic Orientation that starts at 6:30 pm in our Old Gym.

Reminder: The deadline for online registration (School Loop-Athletics Page) and your winter sports physical is on Friday, November 4. See Coach K with any questions.

ANGEL CHESNEY NAMED FINALIST FOR TRIPLE-IMPACT SCHOLARSHIP---

 

Congratulations to Angel Chesney who has been named a finalist in the 2016-2017 Positive Coaching Alliance Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarship Program. Over 3,200 applications were submitted, with more than 6,600 references for those candidates, a testament to the amount of competition the finalist faced.

PCA will name scholarship winners starting in September and continuing through the Spring of 2017.
